Fewer students attending so-called directional universities is a national trend but the problem is more acute in Illinois. One possible solution is equitable funding, but not everyone is on board.

Sometimes called directional universities, the schools representing geographical areas of the state, including Eastern Illinois University, Northern Illinois University and Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, are facing some of their most significant challenges in modern times in attracting students.
