Chicago Tribune Opinion

Monday, February 9, 2026

Today in our Opinion section, former Chicago Public Schools head Paul Vallas argues that strong Catholic schools help strengthen public schools, even though conventional wisdom typically assumes otherwise.

With all of the retooling of Chicago's roads to better accommodate bikes and pedestrians, Chicagoans are becoming familiar with concrete barriers; the changes to Archer Avenue have been a particular flashpoint in the debate with one side promoting "separation" and the other alleging (and lamenting) the loss of parking and loading zones. Today, in a provocative piece, Yunus Emre Tozal argues that the issues here run far deeper than just "asphalt and concrete."

We get the feeling further news is coming this week regarding the Chicago Bears and its potential relocation to the State of Indiana. Sunday, our architecture writer Edward Keegan asked the very timely question as to what any such Bears stadium would help such long-neglected communities as Gary.

Our endorsements continue to roll out this week as we move through the numerous races impacting Illinoisans. Sunday the editorial board endorsed Fritz Kaegi for Cook County Assessor and today we endorse Melissa Bean for Congress in the Democratic primary contest and Jennifer Davis in the Republican race in Illinois' 8th District. Many more are to come as the week moves on.

With so much going on in political races and beyond, we've added an extended selection of your letters. And if you are a Bears fan, especially, let me suggest you take a look at the moving personal story told by Erendira Rendon, who says becoming a football fan can mean feeling at home.

Have a great Monday,

— Chris Jones, editorial page editor
